James Scott

NAPP Founder and Head Coach

Introduction to fitness

James was never a sporty type. Not sticking to any particular activities at school, and tending to find any excuse to get out of Physcial Education. A shy, chubby teenager who spent too much time playing computer games, James originally started trying to get into shape to help with confidence. It started with a Wii Fit and a book called 'You are your own gym'. When James felt "ready", he made his way into the local gym. A couple of years down the line, he discovered CrossFit from a couple of the members who were doing the "Workout of the Day" (WOD). He tried it out, found his local box at the time (LNCrossFit) and joined up straight away, aged 18.

Education

Aged 18, James also acquired his Personal Training level 3 qualification, just before heading to Newcastle University to study Physiology, where he joined the weightlifting club. Year 2 of University he acquired his British Weightlifting Level 1, in order to coach the weightlifting club due to the departure of the original coach. In his Final year of undergraduate study he took the CrossFit L1 and began coaching at what was at the time called Reebok CrossFit Tyneside.

Graduating, he began coaching full time: taking classes, personal training sessions and online coaching. Shortly after, he attended the CrossFit Gymnastics Course, acquired British Weightlifting Level 2, and studied The Brand X Method for youth coaching. With a constant thirst for knowledge, he went back to formal education, taking a Physiotherapy Masters at Northumbria University.

He continues to refine his craft as a coach by working with mentors, and with further study into nutrition and biomechanics.

Sport

James has become a fierce competitior since graduating from his BsC. Individually he has taken part in a few individual competitions (The Castle Games. Battle for Middleground. The Rainhill Trials.) but more significantly has competed at the sactional/semi-final level in The CrossFit Games for three years (2019, 2021, 2023).
